Feel the Burn

With only an hour and a half to squeeze in some exercise during my day
today, I opted out of the gym and decided to take a hike on the trail
that begins at the cemetery at the end of my street and climbs up to a
ridge between San Rafael and Terra Linda. Close by, a short trail, it
seemed a compromise on a tight schedule.
Did I mention that it is 100 degrees fahrenheit today? At first I was
fine, moving along at a clip, refreshed and vigorous. Halfway up the
trail, I realized the folly of taking what seemed to be the easiest
path when I remembered the utter lack of trees and shade on this
particular hill, and my fair European genetic makeup began to protest.
I was very very hot. I was not enjoying myself as I saw the dirt path
in a mirage of heat waves before me, the dry grass baking, my allergies
causing a fit of sneezing. To sum it up, I got burned.
Sometimes settling for the path of least resistance brings more grief
than waiting for the right path and the right circumstances. The easy
way isn’t always easy. Next time I will wait for the right time and the
right place. Nobody likes to get burned.
