Just Keep Walking

Summer is over. The air is becoming crisp, the foliage dry and brown. I hiked a familiar trail, and went a bit further than usual, to see what was ahead. This trail bores me now, but it has become a habit. I keep waiting for for something to change, for something to surprise me around the bend. "Just keep walking" is my mantra. But when I had followed the trail further, the surprise was only that it spit me out on a street. Nowhere to go but back.

We cannot always know where the trail goes. We cannot know what turns it takes, who will join us, who will leave the trail, or if we will be joined at all. I tried to focus on the ground beneath me on the way back, to see the tiny wildflowers sprouting at the sides, to accept this as my path and not the potential of the bend ahead. Just keep walking.
